How do I know I need a new or larger electrical panel?
Most callers want a 100-amp to 200-amp upgrade. The reasons are usually one of these:
- Your insurer says the panel is too old or the brand is on a risk list
- The panel has no free spaces left for the circuits you want
- Breakers trip when several appliances run together
- You are adding a pool, solar, a split air conditioner or an EV charger and do not know what size supply it needs
- A detached garage, ADU or workshop needs its own sub-panel
- NOTE Some callers describe fuses that screw in like a light bulb. That is an old fuse panel, and it is a common reason to replace the whole thing.
What if I do not know my current amperage?
Look at the main breaker at the top of the panel. The number on it is your amperage. If you cannot read it or are not sure, tell the call center. The electrician checks it on the visit.
What did we find on real panel jobs?
A new panel needed more outgoing routes for cables, but the conduit entries, the openings where cables enter, were overcrowded. The property kept a service cupboard, and a storage rack stood next to it. We redesigned the entry arrangement, and the conductors ended up with proper space and protection.
A replacement panel clashed with plumbing. The old location had no clearance, so we agreed the new access route first and moved the distribution equipment. The access matched the design we had agreed with the owner.
A studio needed its own supply. Its circuits shared an obsolete distribution board. We installed a reviewed sub-panel, and the studio got its own marked circuits.
A panel design includes conductor entry space, access and the connected loads. We check those before choosing an enclosure by circuit count alone. Our work addressed a new panel needed more outgoing routes: we redesigned the entry arrangement.
- Tip tell us about any plumbing or building work planned near the panel. We include it in the survey.
How much does it cost to upgrade or install an electrical panel?
Callers most often ask about upgrades. New 100-amp panel installation begins at $1,200 per job. A simple 100-amp replacement starts at $800, and a standard 200-amp upgrade starts around $1,300. These are starting prices; your cost may differ.
| Service | From | What the starting price covers |
|---|---|---|
| Electrical panel installation | $1,200 per job | Basic new 100-amp main panel installation; substantial service work costs more |
| Electrical panel upgrade or replacement | $800 per job | Simple 100-amp replacement; a standard 200-amp upgrade starts around $1,300 |
- Where the panel sits and how easy it is to reach
- Whether cables need new routes into the enclosure
- The size of the panel and the number of circuits
- Planning the power cut and testing every circuit
Is the panel quote free, or do I pay for a diagnostic visit?
A panel project is a defined, high-end job, so the quote is free. If the real question is why something is tripping or burning, that is a diagnostic visit first.
| Job | How you get a price | What to expect |
|---|---|---|
| New panel installation | Free quote | The call center gives you a price estimate with your slot. The electrician confirms the price after looking at the panel and the routes. |
| Panel upgrade or replacement, 100-amp or 200-amp | Free quote | Tell us what you plan to add, such as a pool, solar or a charger, so the electrician sizes it for that. |
| Sub-panel for a garage, ADU or outbuilding | Free quote | The electrician needs to see the route from the main panel. |
| Circuit breaker replacement | Free quote | One breaker or a full set, priced after the inspection. |
| Panel that trips, buzzes or smells hot | Diagnostic visit first | The electrician finds the cause before pricing the repair. A diagnostic visit can carry a charge, which varies and is usually under $50. |
What happens between my first call and a finished panel?
Call the call center and a person answers right away, or send the form and we aim to return your call within five minutes.
You get a time slot and a price estimate on the phone.
You book the visit, and we move the timeline if your plans change.
A licensed electrician surveys the old panel, the cable routes and the space around it, and inspects the project.
If you accept the price, the work can begin that day. You can also book it for later.
On the work day we agree the time the power is off, fit the new panel, connect each circuit and test all of them before the power returns.
Same-day appointments are often available when electricians are free. Our call center answers 24/7.
Do I need a permit, and will the utility be involved?
Panel work is dangerous. Only a licensed electrician should open a panel.
Permit and inspection rules depend on your city or county. The electrician explains what your job needs and in what order.
Some properties need the electric utility to disconnect and reconnect the supply. The electrician tells you whether yours does.
A replacement breaker has to be one the panel maker lists for that panel. Eaton, for example, publishes a catalog of classified breakers it tests for fit in other makers’ load centers: Eaton classified circuit breakers
Electrical panel questions we hear most
Do I need 100 amps or 200 amps?
It depends on what you run now and what you plan to add. The electrician checks your loads before suggesting a size.
My insurer says the panel is too old. Can you help?
Our electrician inspects the panel and gives you the price for replacing it.
Can you add a sub-panel for a garage or ADU?
Yes. We installed a sub-panel to give a studio its own circuits.
Will the power be off?
Yes, for the planned work. We agree the time with you first.
Is installation the same as repair?
No. Installation fits a new panel. Repair fixes one part of the panel you have; see panel repair.
Are you licensed and insured?
Yes. Electric Wire Services is a licensed and insured electrical company, and licensed electricians visit you.
