When should a business call about commercial wiring repair?
Call when equipment you need to open has lost power, or when the wiring is slowing you down. The Electrical Safety Foundation International (ESFI) lists flickering lights, frequent breaker trips, warm or discolored wall plates and a burning smell as warning signs.
In a business, the first sign is often quieter:
- A display, sign or light strip goes dark while the rest of the room works
- An outlet fails the moment a machine starts
- An emergency light stays dark after you press its test button
- Breakers trip whenever several machines run together
- SAFETY If a switch or outlet smells of burning or crackles, stop using it and call us. If you see flames or smoke, call 911 first.
Is it an electrical fault or a fault in the equipment?
Tell us what stopped working. The electrician checks the supply, the wiring and the controls first. If the fault sits inside the machine itself, we say so, so you know which trade to call next.
This matters most with freezers, ovens and heating or cooling units, where the electrical side and the equipment side get mixed up.
What happened on real commercial jobs?
A bakery display lost its lighting. The business needed it back before the next opening, and the hall to the display was narrow. We checked the supply before touching the equipment and found that a failed low-voltage supply had shut the light strips down. We fitted the specified power unit, and the display lit evenly. A new wall connection would not have fixed this.
A workshop outlet failed whenever the machine ran under load. The connector was not rated for that machine, and a repair next door limited where we could work. We fitted the correct connection system, and the machine got a suitable supply. Keeping heavy plugs and stored items off the new joint protects it.
An office emergency light stayed dark. Its test switch had failed, so restoring power alone would not have shown the light was ready. We renewed the test assembly and ran the functional checks. That check is why the light can be trusted in a real emergency.
A failed low-voltage supply shut down its strips; we fitted the specified power unit. Commercial repairs need the operating condition that reveals the fault. We test with the relevant load and explain any limits on returning equipment to service.
- Tip write down the equipment your business cannot open without. It tells the electrician what to check first.
How much does a commercial electrician charge per hour?
Commercial electrical work starts at $100 per hour for basic labor, and minimum booking hours may apply. This is a starting price; your cost may differ.
| Service | From | What the starting price covers |
|---|---|---|
| Commercial electrical services | $100 per hour | Basic commercial labor; minimum booking hours may apply |
- How easy the work area is to reach
- The specification of the replacement parts
- How much testing the equipment needs after the repair
- How many hours the fault takes to trace
Is a commercial quote free, or is there a diagnostic visit first?
It depends on the job. A free quote is for a defined, high-end job. A diagnostic visit is for when an electrician has to find the cause before anyone can price the repair.
| Job | How you get a price | What to expect |
|---|---|---|
| Equipment lost power and the cause is unknown | Diagnostic visit first | The electrician traces the fault, then tells you the repair price. A diagnostic visit can carry a charge, which varies and is usually under $50. |
| Panel upgrade or panel installation for the business | Free quote | The call center gives you a price estimate with your time slot, and the electrician confirms it after inspecting. |
| Circuit breaker replacement | Free quote | Same route: estimate when you book, confirmed price after the inspection. |
| Repairs billed by the hour | From $100 per hour | Basic commercial labor; minimum booking hours may apply. |
You get the finding and the price before any work starts.
What happens when I call, and who needs to be on site?
Many of our commercial callers are owners or managers who are not at the business when the fault happens. Give the call center the name of the person who will meet the electrician, and say what has stopped working.
Call the call center and a person answers right away, or send the contact form and we aim to call you back within five minutes.
The call center offers a time slot and talks through a price estimate.
You book the visit. If your trading hours change, we adjust the timeline.
A licensed electrician visits, inspects the problem and finds the cause.
If you accept the price, the work can start during that visit. You can also book it for a later day.
Our live call center answers around the clock, so you can ask for the slot that suits your opening hours.
What are the safety and permit points for commercial electrical work?
Electrical faults in a business are not do-it-yourself work. Stop using an outlet or switch that smells of burning or crackles.
Permit and inspection rules differ by city and county. The electrician tells you whether your job needs a permit and what comes first.
ESFI explains the warning signs of overloaded circuits and says heavy extension cord use is a sign you may need more outlets: Don’t Overload Your Home
Commercial electrician questions
Will the electrician fix the fault on the first visit?
The electrician inspects first. If you accept the price, the work can go ahead that day, or you can book it for another day.
I run the business from another location. Can someone else meet the electrician?
Yes. Give the call center that person’s name when you book.
Do you repair the machine itself?
We repair the electrical side: the supply, wiring, controls and connections. If the fault is inside the equipment, you will hear that after the inspection.
Can you come outside our trading hours?
Our call center answers 24/7 and hours are flexible. Tell them which hours work for you.
Are you licensed and insured?
Yes. Electric Wire Services is a licensed and insured electrical company, and licensed electricians visit you.
